Masala Bhangra

Dear Sarina,
I could not let this week go by without paying tribute to India’s legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. She passed away on Sunday Feb 06, 2022 at the age 92. She was a household name not just in India but across the world. Over her career spanning seven decades, she sang more than 30,000 songs in over 36 Indian languages and a few foreign languages, which also gained her honorific titles such as the Nightingale of India, Voice of the Millennium, and Queens of Melody. She was awarded India’s highest civilian honor the Bharat Ratna. I personally grew-up listening to songs sung by her and have choreographed to many of them. Here are some of my favorite ones:
  • Lodi (Veer-Zaara, 2004)
  • Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham title Song (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, 2001)
  • Aankhein Khuli (Mohabbatein, 2000)
  • Dil to Pagal Hai title song (Dil to Pagal Hai, 1997)
  • Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna (Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, 1995)
  • Inhi Logon ne (Pakeezah, 1972)
“Music is my life and God,” Ms. Mangeshkar once said. “My prayer is music — it is like a father and mother to me.” I found a collection of some of her best songs. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Xoxo,
Sarina
